A Series To RememberPhilippa Gregory is one of my favorite authors and she did not disappoint me in this three book series. I bought this particular copy for my Mom, who had read the other two books but not this one. Mom read it in a few days and enjoyed it thoroughly. The characters are believeable and evoke a variety of emotions. There are unexpected twists and turns in the plot which makes it almost impossible at times to put the book down.

| 2nd in a trilogy..Read Wideacre firstUnlike many of the other reviewers I did like this book. I think all the 1 star reviews from people who didn't read the first book in the trilogy are unfair. This is a continuation of Wideacre and not at all a stand alone novel. That being said I hated that the daughter of the deliciously evil Beatrice Lacey was such a gullible wimp. I don't think I am giving anything away by saying that since so many reviewers before me have said pretty much the same thing. Although there were many times when I wanted to pull Julia out of the novel and smack her upside the head I think that was something Philippa Gregory wanted us to feel. It made for an interesting nature vs. nurture conflict since Julia was raised by the ever kind and good Celia. Richard came off to me as being very much a mixture of the evil that was Beatrice and the weakness that was Harry.
Although this novel is glaringly just a bridge to get you from Wideacre to Meridon, bridges are important after all! If you loved Wideacre, you will like this book as well I think. I say like not love because Wideacre was a better book. Still, I know this review seems conflicted but I did truly enjoy reading this book and look forward to Meridon.
Oh yes I also want to add do not believe the reviews that say this is "the same book as Wideacre". That is a ridiculous claim. Even though the place may be the same the two books are very very different animals and I am flabbergasted that anyone would think otherwise.

| My favorite NovelIf you are expecting a "The Other Boleyn Girl"-ish story, you have come to the wrong place. And if you are looking for a lovey dovey, flower and hearts romance you will not be pleased.
But if you want an authentic, well written, dark, horrifyingly pleasing story then this is definitely for you.
You grow hating and hating Beatrice with every choice she makes and,to be honest, the ending does leave you disquieted.
The characters are well developed and there actions and behaviors are explained. If you pay attention you will understand everything.
There is nothing more to say... but this is an absolutely magical novel. And I highly recommend it.

Noirest of the NoirThis amazing, grim novel is the ideal noir, in film or literature. If you like the tropes, gestures and sheer style of noir, then you can't go wrong with this book, because they are there in almost every line, every element of plot, especially the long denoument which is both foreseeable and satisfying. This is a great novel of the kind and of the period. If you giggle at the dialogue of "The Big Sleep," then you'll find this book satisfying.
If you're a different sort of reader though, who loves the beauty of the dialogue of "The Big Sleep," for whom noir is as much about ideas and a point of view, then you'll find this book a masterpiece. It's easy to call the book cynical, but it's not at all - the main character is cynical, and he both exploits that cynicism and is trapped by it, and his cynicism reflects that found in American society. Noir stories improvise their own sets of morals and values and, if the stories work, those ideas makes sense in the context, and in "Nightmare Alley" they work brilliantly and with great power. The book is as grim as it gets, but the power of Gresham's writing makes it almost relentlessly gripping; his lines and dialogue are excellent, and so is his structure. The pacing is excellent, the characterizations are not just effective but creatively done - these are real people, even the minor figures - and the overall shape, the way Gresham places his chapters, is terrific. His subject and context may be pulpy, but the writing is deeply skillful and without cliché. And what is perhaps most exciting and satisfying is that Gresham goes, without fear and sensationalism, so deeply into the possibilities of human cynicism and depravity, far deeper than even Jim Thompson, and that is what noir is all about. In it's own way, this is a great American novel.

| PatheticPros: It's a book. If you get cold you can burn it for heat.
Cons: CD does NOT work with VISTA. This is a known issue that they don't give a **** about and have no intention of fixing. They have a canned message when you email their support. Over half the practice tests are on the CD and they have NO intention of patching it or even trying to make it work with Vista.
From their customer support:
"Thank you for contacting Kaplan's Books and Software division. The CD's are not fully compatible with Windows Vista 32-bit. It is not compatible with Windows Vista 64-bit."
If it doesn't work with Vista god help you if you try to make it work with Windows 7.
You have to email their support. They do not have a phoneline. They will not answer the phones. If you try to call a different section they will tell you to email that department and they can not help you.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Kaplan has lost all respect for their customers and resorted to cheap tricks to try and sell their courses. They do not care at all about their books. The latest editions are riddled with errors. Kaplan does NOT care about their books, only getting you into their thousand dollar courses. I say they need to learn to treat their customers with respect.
