| Inadequate! The Sparknotes GRE guide was the second book I began working through after finishing Cracking the GRE with DVD, 2010 Edition (Graduate School Test Preparation). My first impression was that this guide would give a witty yet thorough treatment of GRE topics and some no-nonsense practical test taking advice. My first impression was erroneous!
First, this book has no margins in which to take notes or solve example problems as you go along. You'll have to squeeze your personal scribbles in between paragraphs and in the upper/lower margins of the page. This wasn't such a fatal flaw for me, but it was an ongoing aggravation as I worked through the text.
Second, the book assumes you are dumb. You might say, "well I am dumb!" But you and I both know otherwise. Students who are serious about test preparation are probably also serious about graduate school. Therefore, the writers should assume we are inquisitive bookish people who want to know both "how" and "why." The authors of this book come right out and tell you "it doesn't matter why method X works, it just does." I wasn't a fan of this oversimplified sarcastic tone.
Third, the examples are sparse as you work through the text. Furthermore, they are poorly designed questions intended to "look" like GRE questions when in reality, they are a bit left field. In short, as I read and worked through the example problems, I sensed that the questions truly didn't mimic the true "GRE style." This brings me to a similar but somewhat unrelated point. This book's chapters follow the exact organizational structure as the Princeton Review book (minus the fact that they put verbal second and math first). I got a sense that the authors simply took the competitors books and condensed them to produce this Spark Notes amalgam.
Finally, the explanations for math topics are poor and inadequate. There are several occasions where the author will have you reading 3 paragraphs of text just to conclude that 1 is not a prime number. Or, they'll spend 4 pages showing how to solve 2x + 4 = 10 and a mere sentence explaining complicated concepts.
Given a choice, I would pass on this book (unless it were free.) Take a look at the Princeton Review GRE book I mentioned earlier and also spend some time with GRE: Practicing to Take the General Test 10th Edition (Practicing to Take the Gre General Test) since those are resources with actual GRE-style questions. | Zola meets Dostoevski at Kafka's houseThis is one of the most violent novels ever written. As other novels in the Rougon-Macquart series focused on alcoholism or prostitution or politics or the artworld, this novel focuses on murder. It seems that every character here is some kind of murderer, that the entire human race consists either of murderers or potential murderers needing only the right spark to set off their explosions. The setting for Zola's story is the world of the Paris railroad, the neighborhood around the Gare St.Lazare, a fitting environment in which to place people who often seem more like mechanized murder-machines than well-rounded human beings. The power of this novel comes not from its realism but from its strangeness. It is, in its way, as bizarre as anything concocted by Hoffmann or Poe. This is where Zola's Naturalism comes full-circle and meets the Poe-esque terror of "Therese Raquin", Zola's early 'Naturalistic' ghost story. The conjunction gives this novel more of a Modernist feel than we usually find in Zola's work.
I should also mention the prose. The publisher's choice of a Monet 'Gare St.Lazare' painting for the cover of this edition is fitting because Zola's prose here seems to be influenced by his own experience of Impressionist paintings. It seems that Monet and his cohorts taught Zola how to see and describe the modern world in a new way. Read more...

| Also Great for GREI got 670 on my GRE verbal, and this book helped me greatly!
Initially, in my model exams, I could only score somewhere between 350~450. But after a long time of study, I was able to get the high score stated earlier.
There are several good qualities of this book. There is nearly 2000 challenging vocabulary words. The explanation of the words are also phenomenal. Most importantly, the words are used in context, so you can easily memorize the vocabulary word.
This book might be a little too hard for those who has a very weak vocabulary to start with. A good idea is to start with Princeton Word Smart Series with Audio. Merging this book with Word Smart Series is the ideal way to build a solid vocabulary base for GRE examination.

| Could be improved...I honestly found this book to not be very helpful. Instead of simply reviewing math and giving a lot of practice problems, Princeton Review wants you to learn new tips and tricks to get the right answer. (Which, in my opinion, is much harder than familiarizing yourself with concepts you already know.) The verbal review is decent, but the vocabulary list is terrible; they define words you may or may not know using lengthy definitions that include other words you may or may not know, instead of using simple language. After using this book to study for several weeks, my scores on the practice tests had not improved. (It is a very good thing I had to wind up rescheduling my test to a later date due to other reasons, because this was simply not effective preparation.)
I have the Kaplan Vocabulary Book and Barron's Passkey to the GRE as well. I am also going to purchase some materials to practice with, but would not choose Princeton Review again. For some people, this book might be a good way to go, especially if your math skills are not the best. For me, however, it was not worth the money or the time spent in attempting to study from this book. Read more...
