Adequate for what it is

This is a review of this edition, not of the Cratylus, which gets five stars +++. There's little info on this edition provided by either Amazon or the publisher. It is physically a very small edition of the Jowett translation. Jowett's translation is not very true to the Greek, but there is no accurate English translation of the Cratylus available in the manner of Allan Bloom's excellent translation of the Republic. Another reason this edition isn't suitable to serious study is that the Stephanus numbers have been omitted. But it's dirt cheap and portable. Not as cheap as it was when I ordered it three days ago, however. THen it was 1.39. Now it's 2.99 (the publisher's list price) plus 1.99 "sourcing fee" (a.k.a. shipping and handling, since this book qualifies for "free" shipping with Am Prime).

Product Description

The Cratylus, Plato's sole dialogue devoted to the relation between language and reality, is acknowledged to be one of his masterpieces. But owing to its often enigmatic content no more than a handful of passages from it have played a part in the global evaluation of Plato's philosophy. This new English translation by C D C Reeve is the first since 1926, and incomparably the most helpful and accessible now available. It opens up the Cratylus to all philosophically interested readers, as well as to cultural historians and to those whose primary concern is the history of linguistics. The full and lucid introduction does much to illuminate the internal dynamic of this important text and to explain its place within Plato's oeuvre.
