Excellent book

This is the best book ever written about the Harappan ( Sarasvati ) civilization. Well researched and beautifully written. Very convincing.
Feuerstein and Frawley are the best Indologists.

Must Read

It is a fact that over the past 65,000 years modern humans have populated India at different stages. People with a DNA marker defined as M130 (marker appears about 50,000 - 60,000 years ago) are present in India. This is followed by people with M20 marker (marker is about 30,000 years old). These are people mainly from the Middle-East. In parts of South India over 50% of the people have this marker. This is followed by the controversial marker M17 (marker is 10,000 - 15,000 years old). About 40% of the people in Eastern Europe, Siberia and Central Asia have this marker. A large number of people who speak Indo-European languages in India also have the M17 marker (the Aryans??). Less than 10% of South Indians have this marker. It is therefore a fact that people from Eastern Europe and Central Asia did migrate to India (I do not like the word "Invasion" in this case). This migration could have happened anytime in the last 15,000 years. But this does not prove that these people are the reason for the end of the Indus-Valley civilization (if they arrived in India 15,000 years ago they could be part of the Indus Valley civilization).

Everything you wanted to know about the vedic civilization, its achievements in sciences, mathematics, spirituality etc. This book is an engrossing read, dishing out amazing facts in each page and leaves you in awe of the ancient Indians when you are done.

The term "Aryan" does not refer to a particular race

For both native and foreign observers of India, the diversity of race (white colored Brahmins and dark colored Dravidians) has been a bone of contention in all forms of life - social, political, economical etc., One of key arguments of the Aryan Invasion Theory is the explanation of this difference - it contended that white colored Brahmins were Aryans who invaded the dark colored Dravidians during the beginning of Vedic period (before 1500 BC). The authors make a very compelling argument as to why this theory is wrong. They make their case based on structured analysis of archeology (or lack there of) and literary (or lack there of) sources. Chapter 9 is a very good summary that synthesizes these arguments - a very well written summary that crystallizes a vast and broad set of arguments.

By establishing empirical proof that "Aryans" are a group of multiracial people that belonged to the Indus-Saraswati civilization the authors make a very important argument that the term "Aryans" does not refer a particular race but rather refer to characteristics that are common to a broad set of people belonging to the Indus-Saraswati and then later to the Indus-Ganges civilization.

A very interesting read.

Myth making marxist Historians nightmare!

When new evidences arise to challenge the old theories, the theories shlould be discarded and the facts analysed in the light of new evidences. This book precisely does that in case of Aryan Inasion/migration theory.

Although the book seems to be intended to general audience, in my thought it should help historians to analyse the historical artifacts in different context and with a fresh new viewpoint rather than analysing in the colonial mindset that has been selectively groomed amoung students of sociology, anthropology, archeology in India.

A must read for those who are planning to start a career in Ancient india and indology. And a myth breaking book that completely debunks the academic pet theories of present day indologists.

Product Description

For decades, schoolbooks have taught that Sumer was the cradle of civilization. Conventional scholarship has also held that Aryan civilization came to India by way of invasions from the north. But in this ground-breaking book, three renowned scholars show that there was no "Aryan invasion," and that India, not Sumer, was the cradle of civilized humanity. Through exploring the rich symbols, metaphors, and myths of the Vedas, this book also examines the wealth of India's spirituality and its relevance for today's world.
