Last minute miracleI purchased this book only about a month and a half before I was scheduled to take the GRE because the prep course that I took did not go into as much detail as I would have liked about the writing section. They told me how it was graded and what makes a strong essay versus a weak one, but this book made it practical. I appreciated the dissection of the issue essay and the arguments essay. I needed a structure to input my thoughts quickly and that is what I got with this book. I got stuck on starting and ending that I wasted precious time. When the day of the test came I had more time left over to proof-read and revise my essays, and I was satisfied with my score.
Good, but not as great as other reviewers claimThis book is useful for understanding what the GRE is asking for and providing clues on rhetorical devices to use. However, I can't verify that what it tells you is correct, since I only received a 4.0 score. Additionally, the book is a little out of date but this only really effects the description of the test rather than its advice.
Worth Every PennyThis book was an indispensable resource in writing the GRE analytical writing section. What helped me most were the clear and concise descriptions outlining proper essay structure, along with actual example essays implementing these concepts. For my undergrad degree, I never got above a C in any English class. I studied this book for about 10 hours, and scored a 4.5 in the section.
You won't be disappointed. - Engineer
My argument essay was in this book verbatimI bought this book about a month before my test. I only used it like 4 days before my test. The night before I knew there wasn't much I could do so I just read as many of the essays as I could so I could get in my head how to "run" with issues and make some arguments. So the next morning I'm taking my test and one of the argument essays was MY argument essay word for word. I was so excited! Of course I didn't remember the essay word for word but I remembered the arguments and had ample time to add my own. The book was definitely worth the money :)
Not as good, some helpful tips thoughWhile it provides some useful tips for better essays for GRE, some sample essays are logically flawed. (yes, I was surprised to find that out while the author claimed he wrote the essays "not" within time frame). For example. Page 68. Sample Response for issue 1. Moreover, ETS has edited their pools of topic and the topic won't allign with the sample responses in the book. The book's claimed up to date web-page is not up to date either. May be because it has been 6 years from the date of publication.
So I would suggest you to study official PowerPrep from ETS first. It really helps. After all, they are the one who's gonna test you. So you gotta play their game to score.
Then, if you still have time and some bucks (around $ 15.00) buy this book and read. Good luck with your GRE or GMAT. Cheers :)
